The British Invasion

Oscar winners for the past two years have been from the UK and France. What makes actors from the UK so special? In the past few years America actors have lost their popularity. Lately, British actors have been cast as Americans in some movie and TV roles. Why?

British actors, movies and directors have not only dominated the Oscars the have also been dominant in gross sales in recent years. The top grossing actor of 2011 was Daniel Radcliffe with Shia LaBeouf in second. Johnny Depp in third and Robert Pattinson in 4th place. Radcliffe ranked 5th in 2010 up against Depp, Downey, and DiCaprio.

Can an American actor go to the UK and play a Brit?

According to popular theory, the most highly sought actors are the beautiful ones first. Is this true? Then, according to theory the skill as an actor is looked at second. This theory seems to be wrong. Many say that British actors are better method actors. American actors tend to lean towards the character method of acting. Is there truth in the opinions that many UK actors have learned their skills in the theatre thus giving them a big advantage over US actors? Does this make any difference? Apparently it does.

Is it possible that the US has lost it's touch when it comes to finding the truly great American actors of this time? Or is it possible that Americans have become so sick of the tabloid publicity that American actors tend to attract and have lost faith in it's actors. For the past few years the top paid US actors and actresses have in some ways consistantly made one flop after another. We tend to hear of actors wanting more money and of problems on set etc. Americans tend to see the same actors doing the same types of roles. But, people continue to go see these same lame movies. Based on the assumption that star power and not acting ability will really create a great movie.

Several of these actors are actually from Ireland, Canada and surrounding principalities of the UK. So it could be said that this may not be actually called a british invasion. But it is pretty close!

Jeremy Irons (The Borgias) has had a revival period and is currently starring in The Borgias. Irons is also filming Henry IV for TV and also will be filming Beautiful Creatures all throughout 2012. Irons is a strong contender for more awards. David Oakes (The Borgias, Pillars of the Earth) has also been cast in World Without End and the movie Truth or Dare. Oakes has proven that he can play a really naughty guy. naturally people are looking forward to seeing what Oakes can do as a good guy. With his ability to act Oakes has proven through his stellar performances in The Borgias and Pillars of the Earth that he can take on any type of role. Oakes co star from The Pillars of the Earth, Matthew Macfadyen has also been doing several projects. MacFadyen has also been cast in Anna Karenina and was also seen in The Three Musketeers along with Luke Evans, Andrew Davies and Ray Stevenson. Canadian Colm Feore (The Borgias, Thor) also has a busy schedule this year filming The Brother and Wireless. Andrew Pleavin (The Borgias) career is heating up as well . Pleavin is currently cast in the upcoming movie 300: Battle of Artemisia

Henry Cavill (The Tudors, Immortals) proved he had true acting ability during season 3 of the Tudors. Prior to season 3 Cavill was over shadowed by Jonathan Rhys Meyers (the Tudors, August Rush) Since then he has earned through his acting ability the dream job he has hoped for of playing Superman in "The Man Of Steel". What will be after that for Cavill? It looks as if he is going to be the next movie hero. If the script for Man of Steel can pull it off, Cavill should be well on his way to moviestardom! Cavill's co star from Immortals, Luke Evans has really impressed audiences with his performances in Clash of the Titans, Immortals, and The Raven. Even though a few of his movies have fallen short with critics, the critics still agree that Evans is a compelling and talented actor. Evans is possibly one movie choice away from an Oscar nod along with other possible contenders from The Borgias cast.

Cavill is the most popular actor at this time from The Tudors with his unforgettable breakaway performance in Immortals. The Borgias breakaway contenders at this time are Irons, Oakes and Pleavin. But, with 3 more seasons to go and with The Borgias amazing cast there will most assuredly be more contenders from this brilliant cast added to this list.

There is some opinion that American actors are more concerned with the money. Where UK actors are more concerned with their acting skills. Then again you can see where actors form the UK are really working hard whereas many American actors do one movie per year UK actors are making on an average of 3 movies per year.

I am curious to learn how others feel about this topic..

In my opinion maybe actors should be thrilled by their skills instead of thrilled by dollar bills.

Welcome to the British Invasion it should be a blast!
