The Borgias Costumes (Everything Old Is New)

In a production such as The Borgias the costume budget has to be astronomical, so they must try to save some money where they can. These costumes are absolutely gorgeous and they must be a pretty penny to make ... so how to re-use them? Well, I think the show has found a way to do just that.

In the photos below you will notice that some costumes are changed by changing up the sleeves. This actually gives quite a different look to the dress ... although I am not sure it is for the better, but everyone will have their opinion.

There have already been all together new costumes seen in some of the promo videos, so obviously not all costumes are re-used. It will be interesting to see if more re-used costumes crop up during this season.

Vanozza in the season 2 promo photo. It is the same dress as she wore to Joffre's wedding BUT they have changed her sleeves.

Lucrezia at Joffre's wedding in "The French King" episode from season 1. We never did see the full length of the dress, but it is definitely the same dress on the right.

Lucrezia's dress seen here in the promo photo for season 2. We see the full length of the dress that we never really did seen in the first season. The sleeves are even the same in this photo.

Giulia seen here in the first season episode "Death of a Pale Horse". It is definitely the same dress as the one to the right, but again, the sleeves have been changed.

Giulia seen here in the season 2 promo photo. The same dress that she wore in season 1, but the sleeves are different.
Cesare

Cesare is seen here in the episode "The Borgias in Love". Much of the time this costume is covered up by his cape.

Cesare seen the season 2 promo photo ... wearing the same costume as he wore in season 1. The lighting makes it look slightly different, but it is definitely the same. The difference here is that he is not wearing a cape with the costume.
Vanozza dei Cattanei played by Joanne Whalley

Vanozza seen here in the season 1episode "Lucrezia's Wedding" wearing an historically similar dress but with more form fitting sleeves.

Very sorry for the poor quality of the photo, but there was not another view of this dress in the season 2 promo "Open Set" that was any better. When the series airs we will of course bring a better picture.

Anyway, even though the quality of the picture is less than adequate, it still is clear that this is the same dress that she wore in the first season, but the sleeves are changed ... again showing puffier tops of the sleeves.
